Chapter 14: Planning A Rescue

Daylight was fading fast as Joe gazed out of the window of the small cabin. “Why doesn’t Max come back?”

“Maybe he got captured by Mr Ming’s men,” Will said. “Either way, staring out of that window isn’t going to bring him back.”

“Are you sure he told you that he was going to drive through the front gate?” Joe questioned, pacing back and forth.

Will nodded. “For the third time, yes, that’s exactly what he said.”

“But that doesn’t make sense,” Joe replied. “He could only drive through the front gate if…” He suddenly paused. “What if he’s part of the Golden Dragons? What if he’s been lying to us the whole time?”

“If we can’t trust him, who can we trust?” Will questioned.

“We could search this cabin,” Joe said, scanning the room from left to right. “There might be a hidden compartment somewhere. Or maybe a loose floorboard.”

“I don’t think…” Will stood up and hurried to the window. He saw the headlights of a vehicle coming down the road. “Someone is coming.”

“Is it Max?” Joe rushed over to join his friend and looked out. As he saw two headlights and not one, he realised that it couldn’t be Max returning. Remembering what the man had told Will, he left the window and hurried to the door. “Come on, before they get here.”

Will followed Joe out of the cabin. As the boy passed the tarpaulin that the motorcycle had been hidden underneath, he thought of a plan. “Let’s hide here. Then we’ll be able to listen in on whoever is coming.”

“Okay.” Joe joined his friend underneath the cover and waited.

A few moments later, the vehicle came to a stop beside the woodpile, narrowly missing them. Joe heard someone climb out and walk over to the cabin door. He was tempted to peek out, but he didn’t dare, not until he knew a little bit more about the person.

The person knocked on the door. Then, getting no response, called out. “Max!”

Joe frowned. He recognised that voice. He pulled the tarpaulin off him and stood up. “Hello.”

The man turned around. “Where’s Max?”

“Gone to Dragons Den.” Joe looked at Will. “This is Christo, Nadia’s friend.”

Will nodded. “Good to see you. We thought you might have been the police.”

“I see. So that’s why you hid. I…” Christo suddenly peered down the road. “Did Max take the motorcycle?”

“Yes,” Joe replied. “Why?”

“I can hear one. He should come into sight in a matter of seconds.” Christo smiled as, a moment later, a motorbike crested the hill and roared down the road towards them. He and the boys moved aside as Max came to a stop beside them.

Max switched off the engine and climbed off. “What brings you here, Christo?”

“Nadia and I couldn’t stop thinking about those girls who are being held captive by Mr Ming,” Christo replied, “so I came to see if you wanted some help.”

“Let’s go inside and talk.” Max led the way inside and, once everyone was settled by the fire, he resumed speaking.
