Chapter 14: Planning A Rescue
Daylight was fading fast as Joe gazed out of the window of the small cabin. âWhy doesnât Max come back?â
âMaybe he got captured by Mr Mingâs men,â Will said. âEither way, staring out of that window isnât going to bring him back.â
âAre you sure he told you that he was going to drive through the front gate?â Joe questioned, pacing back and forth.
Will nodded. âFor the third time, yes, thatâs exactly what he said.â
âBut that doesnât make sense,â Joe replied. âHe could only drive through the front gate ifâ¦â He suddenly paused. âWhat if heâs part of the Golden Dragons? What if heâs been lying to us the whole time?â
âIf we canât trust him, who can we trust?â Will questioned.
âWe could search this cabin,â Joe said, scanning the room from left to right. âThere might be a hidden compartment somewhere. Or maybe a loose floorboard.â
âI donât thinkâ¦â Will stood up and hurried to the window. He saw the headlights of a vehicle coming down the road. âSomeone is coming.â
âIs it Max?â Joe rushed over to join his friend and looked out. As he saw two headlights and not one, he realised that it couldnât be Max returning. Remembering what the man had told Will, he left the window and hurried to the door. âCome on, before they get here.â
Will followed Joe out of the cabin. As the boy passed the tarpaulin that the motorcycle had been hidden underneath, he thought of a plan. âLetâs hide here. Then weâll be able to listen in on whoever is coming.â
âOkay.â Joe joined his friend underneath the cover and waited.
A few moments later, the vehicle came to a stop beside the woodpile, narrowly missing them. Joe heard someone climb out and walk over to the cabin door. He was tempted to peek out, but he didnât dare, not until he knew a little bit more about the person.
The person knocked on the door. Then, getting no response, called out. âMax!â
Joe frowned. He recognised that voice. He pulled the tarpaulin off him and stood up. âHello.â
The man turned around. âWhereâs Max?â
âGone to Dragons Den.â Joe looked at Will. âThis is Christo, Nadiaâs friend.â
Will nodded. âGood to see you. We thought you might have been the police.â
âI see. So thatâs why you hid. Iâ¦â Christo suddenly peered down the road. âDid Max take the motorcycle?â
âYes,â Joe replied. âWhy?â
âI can hear one. He should come into sight in a matter of seconds.â Christo smiled as, a moment later, a motorbike crested the hill and roared down the road towards them. He and the boys moved aside as Max came to a stop beside them.
Max switched off the engine and climbed off. âWhat brings you here, Christo?â
âNadia and I couldnât stop thinking about those girls who are being held captive by Mr Ming,â Christo replied, âso I came to see if you wanted some help.â
âLetâs go inside and talk.â Max led the way inside and, once everyone was settled by the fire, he resumed speaking.
